Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    I have no good apart from you.”
As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble,
    in whom is all my delight.
Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or take their names upon my lips.
The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
    you hold my lot.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage.
I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
    in the night also my heart instructs me.
I keep the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
    my body also rests secure.
10 For you do not give me up to Sheol,
    or let your faithful one see the Pit.
11 You show me the path of life.

    in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

One Member's Thoughts about Holy Week

This week which started on Sunday with both the celebration of Palm Sunday and the sadness of Passion Sunday is challenging for me.  So many conflicting emotions are packed into one short week!

I work during the week, so I have to schedule time in the day to focus on what once happened during this most important week.  I was glad that on Sunday that we members first celebrated Palm Sunday and Jesus' entry into Jerusalem amidst the adoration of the Jewish people, by singing "Glory, Laud, and Honor" and waving palm branches!  I love that celebratory piece!

But then, because many parish members miss out on the Holy Week services Thursday and Friday, Pastor Dana Helsing had members of the congregation read the story of Jesus' last week, including Judas' Betrayal, Peter's Denial, the Jews' Riotous Call for Crucifixion, and Jesus' Death on the Cross. So in a one-hour gathering last Sunday, I felt emotions of jubilation and of sorrow!  Arrggghhh!

Now, another issue that I have during Holy Week is that when I go to work, teaching, I am completely wrapped up in my students and my lessons and my schedule.  I do not have (take?) time during the work day to reflect on this important time in Christ's life.  At night, I go home and am exhausted after work.  Until I go to bed, I have not taken time to reflect on this important Week.  So,
I am grateful for the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday commemorations which Genesee Lutheran Parish will have this week at St. John, to help me and all of us to focus on those last precious days of Jesus before his death on the cross.

Now, on Easter Sunday, the most happy and exciting day of the Church year, I will be happy again!  I cannot wait.  But, I am glad that I am finally old enough, mature enough, and wise enough to realize that Easter and Christ's Rising from the Dead will not be as joyous to me unless I feel the fear and sadness and grief that was felt all of those years ago.

April 9th Readings and Gospel

First Reading

Isaiah 50:4-9a

The Lord God has given me
    the tongue of a teacher,[a]
that I may know how to sustain
    the weary with a word.
Morning by morning he wakens—
    wakens my ear
    to listen as those who are taught.
The Lord God has opened my ear,
    and I was not rebellious,
    I did not turn backward.
I gave my back to those who struck me,
    and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard;
I did not hide my face
    from insult and spitting.
The Lord God helps me;
    therefore I have not been disgraced;
therefore I have set my face like flint,
    and I know that I shall not be put to shame;
    he who vindicates me is near.
Who will contend with me?
    Let us stand up together.
Who are my adversaries?
    Let them confront me.
It is the Lord God who helps me;
    who will declare me guilty?
All of them will wear out like a garment;
    the moth will eat them up.

Second Reading

Philippians 2:5-11

5 Let the same mind be in you that was[a] in Christ Jesus,
6 who, though he was in the form of God,
    did not regard equality with God
    as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself,
    taking the form of a slave,
    being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
8 he humbled himself
    and became obedient to the point of death—
    even death on a cross.
9 Therefore God also highly exalted him
    and gave him the name
    that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
    every knee should bend,
    in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue should confess
    that Jesus Christ is Lord,
    to the glory of God the Father.
